GaN Systems’ bundles a GaN-based audio amplifier and power supply to promote the development of GaN in Class D audio products. The GeN2 reference design enables engineers to realize the benefits of GaN technology to create premium audio systems that not only achieve better sound quality, but also are smaller and lighter.

The evaluation kit comprises two GaN-based boards: a 2-channel, 200-W per channel (8-Ω) Class D audio amplifier that achieves 96% efficiency and a switch-mode power supply (SMPS) with power-factor correction that delivers 400 W continuous and 550 W peak. GaN enhancement-mode high electron mobility transistors (E-HEMTs) are implemented in both the audio amplifier and SMPS. The Class-D output stage of the audio amplifier employs 100-V GaN E-HEMTs, while the SMPS is controlled by advanced digital control methods coupled with 650-V GaN E-HEMTs.

The GeN2 reference design provides a 20% overall size reduction in the power supply. It furnishes a higher level of protection into lower-impedance loads to the amplifier and offers better thermal management resulting in a 10°C temperature reduction. The fanless design achieves high efficiency across a wide load range using GaN transistors and advanced control techniques.
