In the past two years, fast charging products based on gallium nitride (GaN) have been very popular in the market due to their excellent performance, and this is also inseparable from the efforts of upstream GaN device manufacturers. Not long ago, Infineon also released a new GaN-based integrated power stage (IPS) product for the fast charging charger market - the CoolGaN IPS series. Recently, Infineon held a media communication meeting in Shenzhen, from Infineon Power and Experts from the Sensing System Division shared the development trend of the charger market, and analyzed in detail the characteristics of its CoolGaN IPS series products and Infineon's one-stop USB Type-C solution.According to the calculation of Sinolink Securities, the fast charging penetration rate of "Huami OV" was 52% in 2018, and it increased to 62% in 2019.Among them, the fast charging penetration rate of 20W~30W was 22% in 2018 and 28% in 2019; the fast charging penetration rate of more than 30W was only 1% in 2018, and rapidly increased to 11% in 2019.Corresponding to the average power of mobile phone chargers in 2018 and 2019, the average power was 13.8W and 17.8W, a year-on-year increase of 29% in 2019. Among them, the average power of standard chargers for Huawei and Xiaomi in 2019 was 20.6W and 22.6W, respectively, a year-on-year increase of 44%, 75%.Since 2020, the power of fast charging chargers has been further accelerated. For example, Huawei Mate40 Pro is equipped with 66W fast charging, and Xiaomi Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition mobile phone and iQOO 5 Pro are equipped with fast charging chargers up to 120W.On May 25, 2021, the USB-IF Association updated the v2.1 version of the USB Type-C cable and interface standard. In terms of charging, the USB PD 3.1 fast charging standard has also ushered in a major update, adding three expanded output voltages of 28V, 36V, and 48V, and increasing the maximum output power to 240W.However, from the specification point of view, it seems that both chargers, cables, etc. need to be redesigned, including support for 48V/5A.Subsequently, Xiaomi has announced the world's first 200W wired fast charge and 120W wireless fast charge, and broke two mobile phone charging records, 4000mAh battery, 200W wired can be fully charged in 8 minutes, 120W wireless can be fully charged in 15 minutes.Secondly, GaN devices have small parasitic capacitance, fast electron saturation speed, and high carrier mobility, which also makes GaN switching frequency dozens of times higher than that of silicon devices.Because GaN can work in high frequency bands, the switching frequency of the entire circuit can be increased from tens of KHz to hundreds of KHz or even several MHz.For example, the 65W GaN charger with Type-C interface released by Xiaomi in February last year can charge Xiaomi 10Pro (4500mAh battery) 100% in 45 minutes, but the volume is only 50% of the standard 65W charger of Xiaomi notebook computers. As GaN devices mature, the market penetration of GaN-based chargers is gradually increasing. At present, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, Meizu and other manufacturers have launched GaN chargers.Although the cost of GaN chargers is still relatively high at present, with the maturity of GaN technology and the increase in the penetration rate of related products, the advantages of total cost of ownership per unit power are becoming more and more obvious. As an important supplier in the field of GaN devices, Infineon launched GaN solutions as early as 2018 - CoolGaN 600V enhancement mode HEMT and GaN switch tube dedicated driver IC (GaNEiceDRIVER IC).(Due to the very fast switching frequency of GaN, driver ICs are difficult to match, so GaN device suppliers offer custom driver ICs.)According to reports, the CoolGaN IPS series products released this time, including half-bridge and single-channel products, are aimed at 30W-500W low-power to medium-power applications, such as chargers, adapters and other switching power supplies (SMPS).The biggest feature of the CoolGaN IPS series products is that the GaN switching device and the driver IC are integrated and packaged in the same package.1. Delay as low as 47ns, support 1MH2 high frequency switch, more accurate dead zone control, and better half-bridge control consistency; 2. External configurable drive RC network to optimize specific line dv/dt; 3. Input support Various MCU, DSP or FPGA and other 3.3 V CMOS PWM; 4. Coreless transformer drive, air gap isolation is safer, and 1A/2A drive capability is stronger; 5. Input/output stage functional insulation: a. Digital control and power No noise coupling between stages.b. The upper and lower tubes can withstand higher dv/dt and common mode noise interference.c. No additional driver chip is required, saving costs. In order to facilitate customers to quickly launch fast charging charger products based on CoolGaN IPS series devices, Infineon has also specially launched three 65W fast charging charger reference design boards based on CoolGaN IPS series devices. As mentioned earlier, GaN-based Type-C chargers will become mainstream in the market in the future. In addition to providing the CoolGaN series of GaN switch products that have been mass-produced a few years ago, and the latest GaN-based CoolGaN IPS series integrated power stage products, Infineon, through its acquisition of Cypress, It can provide customers with a comprehensive one-stop USB Type-C charger solution.According to data released by Infineon, its subsidiary Cypress has more than 15 years of experience in USB solutions and 5 years of experience in USB Type-C solutions, and is the world's largest supplier of USB control chips. As of 2020, Cypress has shipped a total of 2.7 billion USB controller chips.Among them, in the USB Type-C market that has emerged in recent years, Cypress has shipped more than 1 billion USB Type-C controllers. As a leader in the power management IC market, with Infineon's acquisition of Cypress, the world's largest USB control chip manufacturer, last year, Infineon has a one-stop GaN USB Type-C charging solution.
